Hello Stan
Here are a few facts re: Thomas Turner and Violet (Potter) Turner. Violet was born in Walton-le-Dale on July 9, 1873 to Joseph Potter and Anne (Law) Potter. She came to the US circa 1899 and was married to Thomas Turner in Tacoma on May 22, 1899. I do not know what ship she came on - I know she said she was very seasick. Thomas Turner was born in Walton-le-dale to John Turner and Isabella (Potter) Turner on April 22, 1859 and came to this country sometime between 1881, (at which time he was listed on the Walton-le-dale census), and 1886 when he immigrated from Victoria, B. C. to Tacoma on the (side-wheel) steamship, George E Starr. We believe he spent some time in San Francisco and have a picture of him when he worked at a hotel in Everett. After he and Violet were married they lived in Tacoma, where he worked as a janitor and sometime around 1911 they bought the farm in Spanaway.
At some point in the l930's he moved off the farm and lived in Tacoma. I remember my mother taking me with her to visit him when he lived in a rooming house across from Sears Roebuck on 13th St. My grandmother stayed on the farm until sometime around 1940 when she sold the farm and moved to a place on Waller Road. I know she was still there on Sept 7, 1941 when they bombed Pearl Harbor because we were visiting her at the time. Shortly thereafter (around 1942) she bought the property on Spanaway Lake and had Rev. Hans Svinth build a small house, which is where I am living now, after much expansion and remodeling in 1976. By this time my grandfather was getting up in years and became ill, so he moved in with her and she took care of him until he died in 1943. My mother, Shirley and I moved in with my grandmother around 1944, because by that time she was getting ill and couldn't take care of herself.
I don't know if this is the kind of thing you want, but I have lots more so if you want anything more, let me know. Now that I have written this all out, I think I will make a copy of it for my records. I haven't put it down in narrative before.

I spent most of this afternoon in the Northwest Library at the Tacoma Public Library. I verified, with the help of Tacoma City Directories, that Fred was married four times.
The first listing for Frederick was in 1903 and he lived at 613 N. M Street.
1904 home listed at 6228 Hood, South Tacoma. Occupation was "hlpr G.W. Co."
1905 same address as above. Occupation listed as "Lab ND Shops"
1906 home listed as 1405 South Yakima. Occupation listed as janitor; Fidelity Bldg.
1907 home listed at 8131/2 South I (Eye) Street. Occupation, janitor, California Building.
1908 home listed at 2107 South I (Eye) Street.

1918 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah), 2505 S. I (Eye)
Occupation; Engineer, California, Building.
1920 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1930 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah) 3920 N. 24th
(George Arthur & Laura (Lee) Churchill were their neighbors at 4008 N. 24th Street, in 1930)
1931 see above..
This is were I stopped. So, It appears that Edith Gifford must of divorced Fred in about 1912! Doesn't look like she moved far, the first year of the divorce. Then we know (thanks to your research) she re-married and moved with the youngest child, Edith E. Gifford, south.
Fred must of married, the Lady, my Grandmother Amy called "Minnie" (Wilhelmina) possibly 1914, and was married to Wilhelmina in 1915 and 1916. Beulah must of appeared on the time line in 1917 (?) or so. We now know that Beulah was listed as Fred's spouse from 1918 till his death.
I think we can now, pretty safe to document, that Frederick W. Gifford was married four times. Starting with Kate Potter, then Edith, then Wilhelmina and finally, Beulah; the Great Grandmother that I remember as a child.
I will do some more work in the Northwest Room in the future for the Frederick W. Gifford.

Name: GIFFORD, FRED W Date of Death: 12-Oct-1961 Indexing Source: 13 OCT 1961 6 Soundex Code: G163Research Notes from Stan R. Lee (September 16, 2004):
1911 Frederick W. Gifford (Edith), 6021 South Cedar.
1912* Frederick W. Gifford, 6021 South Cedar
1912** Mrs. Edith Gifford, 6017 South Cedar
1914 Frederick W. Gifford, 6021 South Cedar
1915 Frederick W. Gifford (Wilhelmina), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1916 Frederick W. Gifford (Wilhelmina), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1917 Frederick W. Gifford, 2550 S. I (Eye)
Gifford.

"Darwen
Darwen dates its history back to Anglo-Saxon times though evidence is scarce, depending mainly on an ancient burial ground uncovered in the Whitehall area. It takes its name from the river which runs through the narrow valley from the south through the town. From the 19th century passing trade giving rise to regular markets in Over Darwen and during the Industrial Revolution the town grew into a booming cotton mill town and by 1911 its population reached around 40,400.
The Borough of Darwen was created in 1877 and remained intact until Local Government reorganisation of 1974 when it became part of the Borough of Blackburn. Currently around 33,000 live in the town. Overlooking the town stands the dominant Jubilee Tower, (locally known as Darwen Tower), built in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
In 1998 Darwen became part of the new Blackburn with Darwen Unitary Authority which made it completely independent of Lancashire County Council."Information from: http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/lancashire-towns-3.html#Darwen (06 June 2004)
