Death of John B. Jones
"John B. Jones, for 44 years a resident of Ellensburg, died at his home north of this city Friday afternoon. Mr. Jones was 88 years of age and was born in 1833 in Kentucky. He was the grandson of Daniel Boone, the greater Kentucky hunter and frontiersman.
Mr. Jones came to California in 1863 and came from that state to Ellensburg in 1877. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Jones, and four daughters, Mrs. Bernard Hanson of Puyallup, Mrs. Aniver, Mrs. Henry Washburn, Mrs. Harry Needham of Ellensburg, and two sons, Walter Jones of Ellensburg and John Jones of Portland.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Episcopal church, Rev. Oberholtzer of Tacoma officiating."
The obituary was retyped. This obituary was printed in the Ellensburg Capital Newspaper, August 4, 1921. A copy was obtained from the Ellensburg Public Library's Local History Collection.
Note: Oral family history says that John Boone Jones was the great-grandson of Daniel Boone. His mother's name may have been Nancy Boone. Daniel Boone's youngest son, Nathan, had a daughter, Nancy. She died young, sometime in the early 1830's. The records for John Boone Jones' birth and his early childhood are being sought. John's daughter, Narcissus (Jones) Stonebraker, reported that the family's records were lost after a massacre.
Bourbon County Kentucky:
Bourbon County, Virginia (later Kentucky) was formed from Fayette County, Virginia. The 5th to be formed was created on 1 May 1785. Page 104. Some records were lost in a fire on 8 May 1872.Fayette County, Virginia (later Kentucky) was formed from Kentucky County, Virginia. One of the first three counties of Kentucky (with Lincoln and Jefferson Counties), it was created on 30 Jun 1780. Page 310. Most records for before 31 Jan 1803 were destroyed by fire. A second fire on 14 May 1897 also destroyed some early records.

Ancestry of John Boone Jones:
Since John B. Jones was orphaned at a young age, he relied upon his family to provided information concerning his mother and father. His family said that they were from Bourbon County, Kentucky. However, this does not mean they were living in Bourbon County or even Kentucky at the time of his birth or their deaths. Daniel Boone had lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky and even represented the area in the Virginia assembly. But the Boone family had moved to Missouri by the time John was born. No information has been found that his mother and father left Missouri and returned to Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Our Family Stories include the often told story of the ancestry of John Boone Jones. According to his daughter, Narcissus (1875 - 1978), John is the great grandson of Daniel Boone (1734 - 1820). She said that the records that substantiated this link were lost in a massacre. Additionally, family folklore relates that John’s mother’s name was Nancy. Nancy is a common name associated with the Boone Family.
A possible ancestral root which matches the family’s story involves Daniel Boone’s youngest son, Nathan. Nathan Boone and Olive Van Bibber were the parents of fourteen children. Nancy Boone was born 4 March 1808 (also recorded as 14 March 1808) in Missouri. A letter written by Nathan in 1836 indicates that Nancy died on 22 October 1835 after a four day illness.
Letter Nathan Boone to Jesse Van Bibber, 19 September 1836: (Copy from WV archives dated 19 September 1831.)
“In a letter dated St. Charles County, September 19, 1836, to a Jesse VanBibber, a relative of Olive, he (Nathan Boone) wrote, "Our family begins to scatter about." His eldest daughter, Delinda, lived "high up on the Mississippi River." One daughter lived "on the Missouri," while another lived in the "neighborhood." He did not mention his other eleven children except to say that: "We lost a daughter Nancy last Fall. She died on 22 October, with a sickness of four days." Nancy was twenty- two years old when she died. Whether Boone made it home for her burial remains unclear, but he left no further record about the loss of his daughter. The only other glimpse into his family life at this time came with his comment that "Olive has become very fat and can hardly ride."”

Boone, Nathan. Letter,, St. Charles Co, MO, to Jesse Van Bibber, 1831 September 19. 1 item. Ms80-179Little information is available concerning Nancy Boone, the daughter of Nathan Boone, but it was common for a girl to marry by age 16 to 18 years of age. No information has been found concerning a marriage and/or spouse, Nancy may have been married.
John Boone Jones was orphaned at a young age and was sent to live in Arkansas.
Nathan Boone moved his family to southwest Missouri around 1837.
Nathan Boone did visit the area around Clintonville, Bourbon County, Kentucky in the summer of 1843 for about an hour.
I will continue to investigate this connection. Additional research will include marriage and spouse identification.
The Jones Family was associated with the Boone Family for many years. Catlett Jones was a pioneer in Kentucky. Dr. John Jones ( married to Minerva Callaway, Daniel’s granddaughter ) took care of Daniel Boone in his old age.
