Robert L. Lee Dies:

I stumbled on some old news clippings that focused on the death of Robert L. Lee. I guess his attack of "acute ptomaine poisoning last night at his desk" created some news for the local newspaper back then, for the readers of the Tacoma newspaper.

It included his picture with the column headline of "ROBERT LEE EATS CHEESE AND LIES AT DEATH'S DOOR" - General Agent for Southern and Union Pacific Railroads Here Stricken Last Night -
It tells of the account of Robert Lee, district passenger agent for the Oregon-Washington Railway & Navigation Company, lies unconsious at the St Joesph hospital, the victim of ptomaine poisoning and may not live through the day.

It continues to read that he was stricken at 7:30 o'clock while working at his office in the National Realty building. He had two doctors in "constance attendance, but hold forth little hope for his recovery".

"Mr. Lee lunched at home, 1112 South E Street, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, partaking heartily of some cheese. This is believed to have induced the ptomaine poisoning (today known as food poisoning), which later developed into uremic poisoning.

He toppled from his chair unconscious with the first attack. The physicians had him removed to the hospital immediately and everything possible has been done to revive him without avail."

I do have a copy of one article from the Tacoma Daily News, Tacoma, Washington, Saturday, December 28, 1912, with column headline of "ROBERT LEE ILL; UNCONSCIOUS ALL DAY - District Passenger Agent Harriman Lines Near Death."

According to this article, "Mr. Lee has been in Tacoma 25 years as city passenger agent of the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation company and was promoted to be district passenger agent in charge of all the passenger agents between Vancouver Wash., and Tacoma a year ago."

The home address was given as 1112 South "E" Street.

More pictures on the way of his office.

Frank Potter

"Darwen

Darwen dates its history back to Anglo-Saxon times though evidence is scarce, depending mainly on an ancient burial ground uncovered in the Whitehall area. It takes its name from the river which runs through the narrow valley from the south through the town. From the 19th century passing trade giving rise to regular markets in Over Darwen and during the Industrial Revolution the town grew into a booming cotton mill town and by 1911 its population reached around 40,400.
The Borough of Darwen was created in 1877 and remained intact until Local Government reorganisation of 1974 when it became part of the Borough of Blackburn. Currently around 33,000 live in the town. Overlooking the town stands the dominant Jubilee Tower, (locally known as Darwen Tower), built in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
In 1998 Darwen became part of the new Blackburn with Darwen Unitary Authority which made it completely independent of Lancashire County Council."
